CHAPTER 13

“How did the dogs do?” Marty asked when she and Carl had gotten comfortable in the living room after their break.

“Mission accomplished, and I think Miss S. and Patron are going to get along great. They ran around the yard together and look at them now. He’s actually got his head on her bed, and they’re both sound asleep.”

“That worries me,” Marty said.

“Why?”

“Jeff would not be happy about having his big male boxer sleep on a bed with satin sheets. Trust me on that. He’d be afraid it would destroy his downtown image.”

“Yeah, I can see his point. Probably wouldn’t look too good down at the police station to have a big burly detective of theirs have an equally big scary dog who sleeps on a satin bed. I get that, but since he’s not here, he’ll never know. Anyway, hopefully, this will all be over within a few days, and Patron can go back home.”

“Let’s hope so,” Marty said. “Now on to the next suspect. When I was in your shop recently, you told me about an appraisal that a woman was very upset about. Any repercussions from that?”

“I found out that Bambi Escobar did leave Palm Springs and go back to Los Angeles. A friend of her husband to be and hers was in my shop and told me that her husband is furious and blames me for her leaving him. And then there’s the baby he wanted, along with marrying her.”

“Did the friend give you any indication what he was going to do about it?” Marty asked.

“Evidently he went to Los Angles to beg her to come back here and marry him. He promised her all kinds of things, like the biggest diamond ring in Palm Springs, whatever art she wanted, trips anywhere in the world, anything he thought would make her come back to him.”

“Did it?”

“No. Their friend said that Bambi told Jeremy she wanted nothing more to do with him. Then she said, and I guess this is what really got him, that the baby was not his. I guess she’d been seeing someone in Los Angeles at the same time she was seeing Jeremy.

“Bottom line is that the guy she’d been seeing is the father of her baby, and she’s going to marry him. And the final blow is that the guy is a plumber. That’s how she met him, and he doesn’t even own the plumbing company. He’s just an employee.”

“Ouch, and I assume that means all of Jeremy’s wealth really didn’t matter to her,” Marty said.

“Guess not. She’s going to marry the guy and told Jeremy she couldn’t believe she’d been blinded by his wealth. She’s choosing true love over it. Bambi also told him that my telling her that the Picasso was a fake was the best thing that ever happened to her.”

“Let me finish. And Jeremy Lyons blames you for his life blowing up. His wife-to-be leaves him, he finds out that he’s not the father of her baby,
